Change Your Life! Clean Your Fridge
By Guest Blogger, Mary Schmidt, Marketing Troubleshooter
No matter the book or list – the self-help/change your life guides have two common elements: 1. getting organized; 2. starting small with big changes. In The Happiness Project, one of the nine things you can do right now, every day is…make your bed. This advice has also shown up in self-help books (it’s one easy accomplishment that sets the tone for the whole day.)
I’ve been making my bed first thing for years and it does help get me started. (Well, Armageddon may arrive, but at least that’s done.) Then there was the #%^* fridge….ah-yahhh! What was this? When did this tip over? #%^*!, I CAN’T FIND anything!
And, so it’s always been. Frustrating, irritating and depressing. I clean the thing, only to have the problem creep back. (Yes, I realize how lucky I am that I can obsess about a full refrigerator, no matter how messy.) Then, finally I had the epiphany!
If I ORGANIZED the shelves so I could see and easily reach items, I wouldn’t lose stuff in the back (or knock it over…) Less is more; I took out a shelf and a drawer – more effective use of space.
If I PLANNED my cooking – I’d KNOW what I had to use for the coming week. I also bought a new set of plastic containers so I could easily stack them – in the various combos needed for the next meal.(as opposed to creating mysterious foil-wrapped lumps, or jamming yet another casserole dish in the crowded shelves.)
if I learned to LET GO of a failed cooking experiment, there wouldn’t be as much stuff in there, mutating and molding. If it didn’t taste good the first time, a week’s aging ain’t gonna improve it (and putting in the freezer after that is really not going to help.)
And, if I stay COMMITTED to my new fridge policy it’ll be much
easier from now on. (I’m now in month two, and it’s still working.)
Hmmm…organization, planning, small changes, learning to let go, staying committed…could I be on to something I could apply to a blog post about biz?
Why, sure enough!
You can take it from here. Happy Friday!
(Fellas, if you’re thinking this is a woman thing – 1. You should be helping your partner with the house; 2. Substitute the word garage. I cleaned mine last weekend.)
